In the Midst of Tragedy

“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;”

1 Corinthians 1:27

I did a follow up call with someone that I was talking with earlier today. She was concerned about whether she was going to get paid or not due to school closings. I found out the information that was needed and as a courtesy, I wanted to follow up with the call. In doing so it opened up a door for conversation. I didn’t know her and she didn’t know me, but we talked as if we had known each other forever and we talked on the phone for at least 15 minutes.

Do you sometimes wonder why does it always take a tragedy for us being a little more kinder, to show more love and support, going the extra mile, for us to be doing more of what we should have been doing already?

It would probably be safe to say that sometimes we forget, we lose sight, we lose touch or allow the cares of this life to cause us to be disconnected.

Though things are so uncertain at the moment and they have changed so many times in the course of a day. As people are hurting and in turmoil they grow weary causing them to be unsure of what to do next. It is in these moments in the midst of tragedy everywhere, that I still feel that there is hope for humanity.

God knew us before we were even formed in our mothers womb and knows actually what it takes to get us back on the path that he has called for us to be. Just like the ingredients it takes to bake your favorite cake or meal, it is those ingredients of life that God uses to create us into who he has called us to be. Unfortunately, he uses a little of bit of tragedy, sorrow, along with joy, happiness, peace and discomfort, etc. and he mixes them all together to mold us an make us.

” Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am they God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will up hold thee with the right hand of my righteousness”

Isaiah 41:10

Sometimes things have to die, so that other things can live.  Dying to old habits, old mindsets, our selfish ways, so that we can birth to new habits, new ideas, create a better path that others may follow. It’s up to each one of us to be willing to make the necessary changes so that we will become better as a result of it. There is still life even in the midst of tragedy.

In this time of quarantine we should all be willing to do a self examination of the things we need to change within ourselves. What are the areas where we need to heal?  Is there someone we need to forgive? As much as we want things to go back to the way they used to be, things will never be the same again.

Yet I still have this hope that we will all be better after this, as it is causing us to change and have a different aspect on life.  Only those that remain the same are the ones that refuse to change.

Here I am Lord, let the work begin in me!

Holy Ghost, fall down on me
Let Your spirit fall down on me
Holy Ghost, fall down on me
Let Your spirit fall down on me

Create in me a new heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Cast me not away from thy presence, oh God
Take not thy Holy Spirit from me

Holy Ghost, fall down on me
Let Your spirit fall down on me
Holy Ghost, fall down on me
Let Your spirit fall down on me

Holy Spirit help me to walk right
Talk right, live right, help me to be right
I’ll never do anything without
Your leading spirit, Holy Spirit

Cast me not from thy presence, oh Lord
Take not Your spirit
Take not Your spirit from me
Take not Your spirit from me
Take not Your spirit from me

Looking Beyond What I See

” We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

It is only 23 days into the New Year and yet some if not most of us have already experienced some type of loss, hurt, pain, trauma, heartache, disappointment, misunderstanding, betrayal, etc. So to the point that you are already trying to rush the year through, throwing your up your hands as a sign of giving up or even wanting to throw in the towel already. Even in the midst of all of what seems to be a year that has already not started on the right foot, yet there is something on the inside of me that is pushing me to keep moving forward.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things that are not seen”

I was reminded this morning in a song by John Lakin that says:

Things are going to get better
Things are going to get better
Don’t be discouraged by what it seems
God gave me a promise if I just believe. Things are going to get better, better for me.

This is going to be the year where our Faith is really going to be tested and challenged to see if we truly stand and if we truly. Though we say it out of our mouth, does our life exemplify the very thing in which we speak. We aren’t going to be able to say it and not live it, speak it and not be in alignment. What got us to this point will not be the thing alone that will keep us or take us to the next level in God. We are going to have to “Man Up” as they say and increase upon the things that got us to this point.

I am encouraged in knowing that because God gave me a promise and if I would just believe and trust his plan for my life, that he will complete the work that he has began in me.

Refocus your eyes and your attention back to God and watch him work it all out for your good. Follow his plan and His instructions. It is going to cost you something in this season, but don’t worry it will be worth it in the end.

The Closed Door

It so easy to thank and praise God for the open doors. As we consider those doors favor or an opportunity that we know only he could have done.

BUT……….

What about the doors that God  chooses to close?

When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.

Aleander Graham Bell

We confess it with out our mouth, but do we really and truely believe that? If we sincerely believed that, why is to so hard to move forward?

Sometimes we can’t even see the opened door because we are so focused on the door that has closed. Normally it happens suddenly, out of no where and in most cases at the time that it can’t be explained.  When we become emotionally attached, phsycially bond, spiritually connected to certain things and or people when that season has ended it is hard to close that door because we are still attached.

Times will pass and seasons will come and go

Roy Bean

Reason for closed doors:

  • Season Ends
  • God has something better
  • We won’t do it
  • We opened the wrong door
  • Not recognizing the reason for the opened door (misused the purpose)
  • Protection

Through life experiences I have realized that their were a lot of doors that needed to be closed, because it would have caused destruction in my life. There were some doors I should have left closed and because I failed to listen to God it wreaked havoc in my life. Some doors are also seasonal, but because of our attachment to the season we miss it or in most cases ignore the signs that the seasons have passed. Some doors God has to physically close for us because we won’t do it.  Those are normally the ones that close in what seems unexpectedly.

When you know the signifigance of a closed door, you wouldn’t be so distraught over the ones that do. protection + purpose = better

It makes me appreciate the open doors, but I have even more appreciation for the closed ones. It is in those that I know God is looking out for me. As painful as it can sometimes be, it was a blessing in disguise. What turns out to initally look like a bad thing, actually turned out to be good one.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”

Romans 8:28

“For I am persuaded” Romans 8

I am so grateful for all of the open doors and continued doors that he allows in my life. Favor and opportunities that had he not granted them to me I would have not made it this far.  I would diffently not be where I am today.  But, when I begin to think about all the doors God closed on my behalf I get happy.  Just think about all the doors that have been closed on your behalf that you know nothing about. I am thankful for his grace, but I am also grateful for his mercy.

Today I Am Grateful…

I’ve got so much to thank God for

So many wonderful blessings and so many open doors

A brand new mercy

Along with each new day

That’s why I praise You

And for this I give You Praise

This year I wanted to do something a little different for Thanksgiving.  Kinda tired of the same old thing.  Holidays has always been important to me and now so much has changed. Holidays are sometimes a struggle to get through. My girls are away, most of my family works or are not here. Sitting at home starring at a screen TV wasn’t what I had in mind, so I decided to go and volunteer at the Salvation Army. It wasn’t the 1st time that I have volunteered nor helped feed the homeless, but this was a whole different setting for me. Normally when I have volunteered it was with other people that I knew or people that I was familiar with. Today I didn’t know anyone and wasn’t sure what to expect. I got there and introduced myself and asked how could I help. I was working in a small corner with 2 other ladies and while we were putting some snack packets together we opened up with some conversation. There were so many of us there that we were kinda running out of things to do. It had only been  30 minutes and it was another hour before the 1st group of people were going to come through. They had given us the option to leave and come back or we could stay. Honestly part of me wanted to leave, but there was something on the inside telling me that I needed to stay, so I did. I went out and sat at the table thumbing through my phone and one of the ladies came and sat at the table with me.  To be respectful I placed my phone down and we started conversating and then someone else came to join us. It was almost time to feed the 1st group and they were getting prepared to start serving, so we got up to assist them. People started to come in, most of them with smiles and a grateful heart. Some of them were a little shy, but by their second time around most of them had opened up.  We had  a little time before the next crowd was to come in and there were 2 gentlemen that were still there so we went out and mingled with them. Proverbs 18:24 ” A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother”  It was time for the next group to come in and just when we had gotten started one of the gentlemen that we had talked to had given a card to the staff, myself and the other young lady and sons that came out to talk with him. He went on to say, “I just wanted to say thank you for being my family this holiday”  It hit me like a ton of bricks because sometimes we are all that they have. I was humbled and grateful.  There were so many small moments like that throughout that day, but the other one that really stuck out to me was a young girl that came in on crutches with two younger children.  This was their 2nd time coming in that day. I noticed she was sitting at the table balling. Some of the volunteers tried to go out and talk to her, but they were so overwhelmed with what she was going through they had to step away. I stood there and I prayed, Lord give me what to say  and I waited on him to tell me when. I heard the song, “Things are going to get better, things are going to get better, don’t be discouraged by what you see, things are going to get better, better for me” I went over to her and asked her if I could give her a hug and she said yes. She broke down and then said thank you. I began to minister to her and tell my story in hopes that it might encourage her in what she was going through. When she left that day she had a smile on her face instead of tears. Sometimes we can get so bogged down with our own life that we don’t realize that someone else is going through much more than what we might be. Not only that, but some else needs to hear our story to help them persevere through what they are going through and then in turn be able to help somebody else. We have all had to go through to get to the other side.  Somethings we aren’t proud of, but it all has caused us to be where we are today. Someone is in need of your story. I am grateful that I didn’t leave that day.  I would have missed out on so many opportunities to help someone else in need.

It’s Only An End To A Beginning

In every story book there is a beginning and there is an end. In every story there is usually more than one chapter and with every chapter one is ending and a new one begins; however, there are times when the next chapter will be continous from the previous chapter, but yet no two chapters are ever the same.  There are some chapters that you may experience the joys and sorrows, the heartaches and pains. It will sometimes make you happy, laugh or cry and at times you may become angry. No matter the roller coaster of emotions you may experience through out the story if it is something that has grabbed your attention normally by the end of the story you would say, “Now that was a good book”. The only difference in the books that we read and our life story is that it’s true and we are the author of what we write.  Have you ever been reading a book that the chapter (s) were so good  that you had to go back and read it again? Or maybe it made you feel some kinda way, maybe you lost interest and were unable to move past where you were. We can become this way in life that we become stuck at the beginning and we are unable to make it to the end.  We can tend to focus only on the bad things  with in our life story that we forgot about all the good things that have happened or we have experienced that should be able to give us lasting memories, but we allow our worst days to be what’s lasting in our thoughts. God has so much more in store for us if we we could only change our frame of mind.  As we continually grow and if we are wise we are able to continually build upon each one and turn our chapters around.  Everyone may not know the details of our story but they will be able to see it through our lives.  Though that chapter in your life has ended  new life is beginning and the story continues. As you began again flip the page “WHAT’S COMING IS BETTER”

What’s Coming Is Better

As I reflect back on this year so far with it only being the second month of the New Year what a journey it has already been. A lot of people have experienced the bliss and prosperity of what a New Year can bring while some of us have went into the New Year hurting, experiencing some type of pain, disappointment, frustration or a broken heart due to the loss of a loved one(s), a loss of a job, a relationship of some kind has ended or maybe you are fighting for the life of a child. I can guarantee that whatever you maybe experiencing that most of them were unexpected and they came out of no where. For me and I’m sure like many others of you had your goals and plans already set as you were preparing yourself for what you thought was coming next, but then the unexpected happened that caused your life to somewhat shift. I felt my life falling apart in some areas, but  as I began to pull myself together I felt my life coming together in others. After the shock of it all I began to shift my focus and I refused to give up. My mind went back to when I was 17 and I felt like there was no hope for me, that my life was over. So I decided and had made up my mind that day to end my life. I went into my father’s room and stood in his bedroom with the gun that I got out of his drawer and pointed it at my head. I was ready to pull the trigger and then I heard this still small voice say, ” I have better for you.” I kept questioning this voice that kept reasoning with me to make me believe that what’s coming is better. I am now almost 42 years old and though in my life I have had to face many challenges it has been better and yet where I am today is not my final destination it is only apart of my itinerary. Joel 2: 25 says, “And I will restore to you the years that the locust has eaten, the cankerworms, and the caterpillars, and the palmer worms, my great army which I sent among you.” I said all of that to say this, though the fight has been great God is greater than anything you may face and His grace is sufficient for you. You might not be able to understand it, able to explain it or even see your way out of it at this moment, but allow your faith which sees beyond where you are right now and know that what’s coming is better. Take your focus off of where you are now and invision where you want to be. It won’t always be like this God will perfect that concerning you and sooner or later it will turn in your favor, is turning around for you.

We Built It From The Ground

Treva Williams
with her daughters, Cierra, 10, left, and Corrie, 8, at their new
Reems Creek community home earlier this month.

“Surprise don’t get much better than this.”

For 10 months, Treva Williams and her 19-year-old daughter, Kade’sha, kept a whale of a secret from Williams’ two
younger daughters, Cierra, 10, and Corrie, 8.A new house.
“We built it from the ground up,” Williams said, cooking dinner in the
kitchen of her new north Buncombe home as Cierra and Corrie set the
table.
A supervisor at the Mountain Area Health Education Center,
Williams, 40, participated in the Mountain Housing Opportunities
Self-Help Home Ownership program, which provides low- or
moderate-income families a pathway to homeownership.
Participants reduce their mortgage payments through “sweat equity” — working on their home and others in the development on weekends.”We started in November of 2012 and worked through August of 2013 — in the cold,
in the rain, you name it,” Williams said. “We had two contractors on site giving us instructions, step by step.”They put in 17 hours a week, usually working Saturdays and Sundays.
Going through a divorce at the time, Williams told her younger daughters she and their older sister were working on “a project” on the weekends when
they went to stay with their dad. They kept the secret until August, when they blindfolded the younger girls and took them inside the two-story home in the Compass Park subdivision.”It was the hardest thing for me to keep this away from them,” Williams said. “I’m big
on surprises.”When the girls removed the blindfolds, they didn’t know what to make of their surroundings. Until Williams told them it was their house. Then the girls dashed upstairs to claim their rooms.”It still brings tears to my eyes,” Williams said, choking
up. “To be able to provide that for my daughters. I couldn’t have done it without my daughter’s help and without God’s help. If it can happen to me, it can happen for somebody else.
“Williams’ older daughter attends college at Amada Musical Arts School in Los Angeles now, but for 13 years she, her two sisters and their
parents shared a two-bedroom apartment in MHO’s River Glen
Apartments. Williams received information about the Self-Help
program in the mail and jumped at the chance.
The program combines
the sweat equity of multiple families helping build each others’
homes with financing from the U.S. Department of Agriculture,
NeighborWorks America, and Buncombe County.
The girls love the new house, with its spacious living room and laminate wood floors. And
they like not having to share a bed anymore.”We can have our own
room, and I don’t have to sleep with that person,” Cierra said,
pointing at her sister.”Me either,” Corrie chipped in. “She’s such kicker.”Williams, who has a strong Christian faith, thanks Mountain Housing Opportunities and God for her blessings. She knows how tough the Asheville housing market is.”Like in most cities, you have a cost of living and your income that would balance out,”
Williams said, gesturing with her hands for emphasis. “In our area,
the cost of living is very high, but the income is low. It’s hard to raise a family and make it without three or four jobs. “Mountain Housing Opportunities homeowners have built 26 homes so far in the Self-Help program in Leicester, Black Mountain, and the Reems Creek
area of Weaverville. Six more are under construction in Reems Creek, and the next neighborhood will be in Swannanoa. More than 700
hours per homeowner of construction labor creates “sweat equity,”
which serves as down payment on the home, so there is no cash down
payment required. Homeowners in MHO’s Self-Help program typically
have $25,000-$30,000 of equity in their home when they complete
construction and move in.MHO Executive Director Scott Dedman said
homeowners in the Self-Help program “accomplish a Herculean task to
build their own homes.”
“Treva’s story is especially inspirational because her oldest daughter, Kade’sha, worked so closely with her
throughout construction, and then they surprised the younger daughters with the finished home,” Dedman said. “I believe that Treva and her children appreciate the value of owning a home as much as any family could.”An Asheville native, Williams says she
makes between $20,000 and $30,000 a year. They were paying $445 a
month for rent at River Glen, and now her 30-year mortgage comes in
at about $675 a month.Paying the mortgage beats paying rent any
day.”I calculated what I spent in rent, and I would’ve had half a
house paid for if I’d started then,” Williams said. “To me, I think
about how it’s an investment, not a debt.”
